Abstract

Thesis. Today’s students are very much influenced by globalisation and advances in technology. This has brought about some changes in the attitudes and perceptions of the new generation of students which are worthy of attention. The present study aimed to shed light on one such shift of focus and explored Iranian literature students' preferences for either reading or watching the movie adaptations of literary works. The second aim of the study was to examine the reasons for their preferences and to analyse them to see where they originated from.

Concept. To this end, a mixed methods design was used in which the quantitative data was gathered through a questionnaire from the University of Mazandaran English literature students (N=141). In the questionnaire, their tendencies towards either watching movies or reading literary books was explored. Based on convenient sampling, for the qualitative data, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 5 students from each category to find the reasons behind their preferences. The data from the interviews were transcribed and then content analysed.

Results and conclusion. The results showed there existed a higher tendency towards movie watching (58%) among these students. Content analysis of the students’ responses to interview questions also revealed some factors affecting their inclination towards movie watching. The main reason for such a tendency was mentioned to be time constraints. Oher reasons were disclosed which will be reported in the article. The implications of the study will also be discussed fully under conclusion.

    Neshat Azizi is an MA student at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy,
    Philipps University of Marburg. She studied TEFL at the State University of Mazandaran and
    has been interested in doing research as an undergraduate student. Her areas of interest
    include cultural materialism, critical thinking, and literature.

    Fatemeh Khonamri, Department of English, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences,
    University of Mazandaran Fatemeh Khonamri is an assistant professor of TEFL at the University
    of Mazandaran. She has been teaching undergraduate and graduate courses for more than 20 years.
    Her areas of interest include reading and writing research, metacognition, corrective feedback
    and teacher’s professional development.

    The author is graduated from Comenius University in Bratislava in the Slovak Republic at
    the Roman Catholic Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology. She completed a master´s degree
    in Catholic Theology with a focus on religious education. She passed a rigorous examination
    in the teaching of religious education at the Faculty of Education, KU in R. At the same
    faculty, she completed her doctoral studies in the field of Didactics of Religious Education.
    She received her habilitation at the Catholic University in Ružomberok in the field of Trade
    Union Didactics. She also graduated in the field of special pedagogy, she is a member of the
    religious congregation of the School Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, where she is a member
    of the provincial council. She is the founder of the Juraj Páleš Institute in Levoča, she was
    its long-term director and she specialized in pre-school and elementary pedagogy, as well as
    in the special pedagogy of the mentally handicapped, the socially disadvantaged, and medical
    pedagogy. She is a member of the editorial and professional boards of several domestic and
    foreign journals. He currently works at the Institute of Sacred Art TI TF CU in the Spišska
    Kapitula in Spišske Podhradie, where he guarantees the study program of Teaching Music and
    Church Music.

    Khujand University research journal in 2018. In 2008-2011 he was the Head of International
    Relations Office of Khujand University forging cooperation with many Universities worldwide.
    His research area deals with comparative linguistics, English and Tajik languages syntax and
    Translation.

    Her research interests include the problems of cultural and linguistic education, the formation and development of linguistic and socio-cultural competencies of various categories of students by means of  foreign language and literature. She conducts research in the field of student-centered learning, studying educational interests, preferences and other pedagogically significant characteristics of students. She is the author of articles in the field of media didactics, the development and use of information technologies, tools and means in the educational process, including modern audiovisual linguistic educational resources. Under her methodological guidance, a number of digital language education platforms, mass open online courses, digital textbooks and methodological complexes for teaching foreign language and literature have been created. She is one of the founders of the Russian methodological school of testology in Russian language as foreign of various levels and categories of students.
